How much Money You can Receive from Social Security

Monthly Social Security Disability Benefits vary from person to person, based upon an individual’s lifetime earnings record., up to $2300/month. The disabled recipient’s spouse, dependent children and/or parents may also be eligible for benefits, subject to a “family maximum.” A Social Security Disability recipient is usually also enrolled in Medicare two years from the date of onset of disability. Other income from other sources does not usually effect the amount of Social Security Disability benefits one receives, however other governmental payments, included workers’ compensation payments, can sometimes effect benefit amounts.

A disabled person who has not worked enough, or recently enough,  in his or her life may instead of, or in addition to, Social Security Disability, be eligible for monthly SSI. (Supplemental Security Income).  SSI recipients are also eligible for Medicaid. Under this program, benefit amounts will vary depending upon the disabled person’s other assets and income.

***The receipt of disability payments from Social Security can sometimes cause the reduction or loss of other types of benefits, such as long term disability benefits or  pension benefits. (In some states–but not under Michigan workers’ comp–Social Security Disability benefits can reduce workers’ compensation.)
